Marshal A.A. Novikov had been tasked with the coordination of all air activity over the Oder-Neisse theater, that is, for both Zhukov's and Koniev's fronts, from a central headquarters based on the 16th Air Army. He located his command post at the headquarters of the loth Air Army at Ludwigsruh, some twenty kilometers northeast of Kiistrin, where he was also joined by an operations tearn from the 18th Air Anne. An auxiliary headquarters was set up under his deputy some six kilometers from the northern edge of the combat area to supervise the bombing operations, while fighter operations were directed from three special air control centers. The 16th and ISth Air Annies cooperated closely, avoiding confusion over the battlefield by operating at different heights and times. These arrangements enabled them to maintain large forces in the air permanently, with the bombers of the l8th Air Army relieving the l6th Air Army at night.",
